US rapper Fatman Scoop has died. The 53-year-old died after collapsing during a concert. “It is with deep sadness and a very heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of the legendary and iconic Fatman Scoop,” said a statement from the musician's family.
“He was the laughter in our lives, a constant source of support, unwavering strength and courage,” the family statement continued. “Fatman Scoop was not only a world-class performer, he was a father, brother, uncle and friend.”
Great successes in the 90s and 2000s
According to media reports, the musician collapsed at a concert in the US state of Connecticut on Friday evening. The mayor of the city of Hamden, Lauren Garrett, announced on Facebook that he had a medical emergency. Concertgoers and paramedics tried to help the artist until he was taken to a hospital.
Fatman Scoop, born Isaac Freeman III, came from New York's Harlem district and made his breakthrough in 1999 with “Be Faithful”. What began as a small success in the USA became a huge success in Europe with a re-release in 2003 and reached number one in the singles charts in Great Britain and Ireland.
Fatman Scoop also made a name for himself through his involvement in well-known tracks such as Missy Elliott's Grammy-winning “Lose Control” and Mariah Carey's “It's Like That”. In recent years, Fatman Scoop has appeared on TV shows on a number of occasions.
