New train route planned between Hanover and Kyiv

By train from Berlin to Kiev: Apparently this should be possible on a new route in the future. A Czech railway company is planning the train route.

Despite the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, the Czech railway company Regiojet is probably planning a new train route between Hanover and Kiev. This is reported by the “Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung” (HAZ) and refers to the business magazine “Forbes Ukraine”.

Preparations are underway for a new train route to Kiev

The head of the company Regiojet, Radim Jančura, said: “In 2024, in cooperation with Ukrsalisnyzja, we are planning to introduce trains from Kiev to Berlin and from Kiev to Hanover via Leipzig and Dresden.” Preparations are apparently already underway.

Ukrsaliznytsia is the Ukrainian railway company. And even if no exact start time and no exact route have been set, Radim Jančura is optimistic: “Many Ukrainians travel to Germany.”

These connections already exist along the route

There are currently connections – for example from Berlin – to Kiev. However, these are often associated with many transfers and a change of railway companies.

For example, there is a Eurocity from Berlin to Warsaw (Poland) that takes almost six hours. From Warsaw we continue with an Intercity train to Lublin in eastern Poland. The journey takes two hours, then a Polish regional train takes more than an hour to Chelm on the border with Ukraine.

Finally, the Polish train company PKP Intercity travels twelve and a half hours through the Ukraine to Kiev in a sleeper car. In total, such a journey takes about 24 hours with transfer times. A new train route could significantly shorten the journey.
