Cars that are stuck, flooded streets and full cellar: in Tuscany and the neighboring region of Emilia-Romagna, people are fighting against floods. The situation in Florence is particularly dramatic.
Heavy rains keep the emergency services in the Italian regions of Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna in suspense. “I call all citizens to the greatest vigilance and caution,” said Tuscan regional president Eugenio Giani on the Facebook platform. The rains are intense and continued – this means that the situation deteriorates continuously.
The cities of Florence, Pisa, Prato and Pistoia, which are popular with tourists, are therefore particularly affected by tourists. According to the fire brigade, dozens of emergency calls were received in Florence alone for flooding. The city administration ordered the closure of cinemas, theaters and museums. Several cities in Tuscany closed schools. The local authorities and civil protection increased the warning level for the Arno river, which flows through Florence and Pisa.
Location on the rivers in Emilia-Romagna under control
There is a first cautious all-clear in the neighboring region of Emilia-Romagna. There the authorities reported that “the first wave of storms” was over. Above all, the area around Bologna was affected by the storms at night and in the morning.
The situation on the rivers is currently under control. Nevertheless, the highest alarm level continues to apply for the coming hours due to impending new rains. In 2023, 17 people died in flooding in the Emilia-Romagna region.
