European top European politicians have protected the Ukrainian President Selenskyj against the insults of US President Trump. Selenskyj can rely on Europe. But there were other tones too.
After the scandal in the White House, in which US President Donald Trump attacked his Ukrainian colleague Wolodymyr Selenskyj in a sharp form, European politicians in Ukraine have guaranteed their solidarity.
Nobody wanted “peace more than the citizens of Ukraine,” wrote Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) in online service X. on Germany and Europe “can rely on Ukraine”.
The CDU leader and expected future Chancellor Friedrich Merz wrote on X, Germany is “in good and challenging times” alongside Ukraine. “We must never confuse the aggressor and the victim in this terrible war,” Merz wrote in English.
“You are never alone”
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was directly aimed at the Ukrainian head of state. “Be strong, be brave, be fearless. They are never alone, dear President Selenskyj,” she said to X. “We will continue to work with you on a fair and permanent peace.”
The EU foreign commissioner Kaja Kallas questioned the United States' leadership role in the western world. “Today it has become clear that the free world needs a new leader,” she wrote in online networks. She also confirmed the support of Europeans for the Ukraine attacked by Russia.
French President Emmanuel Macron phoned Selenskyj after the scandal. This was announced by the Elysee Palace. Nothing is known about the content of the conversation.
The Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk assured Selenskyj and Ukraine of Poland's solidarity: “Dear @zelenskyua, dear Ukrainian friends, you are not alone,” he wrote a few minutes after Selenskyj's early departure from the white house.
Orban applauds Trump
Completely different tones come from Budapest: The Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban thanked Trump for his commitment to “peace”. “Strong men make peace, weak men wage war,” he wrote in the online service X.
“Today President Donald Trump bravely campaigned for peace. Even if it was difficult for many to digest,” continued Orban and concluded with the words: “Thank you, Mr. President!”
Republicans support Trump
Leading Republicans signaled in the USA support for Trump. “What I saw in the Oval Office was disrespectful, and I don't know if we can ever give up again with Selenskyj,” said Senator Lindsey Graham. “He either has to step down and send someone with whom we can work, or he has to change.”
Trump received sharp criticism from the Democrats in Congress. Her leader in the House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries, accused Trump and his government to embarrass the United States on the world stage.
The meeting with Selenskyj in the White House was horrific and will only serve to further encourage the Russian President Vladimir Putin, “a brutal dictator”. The United States should not reward Russian aggression and appease Putin.
Insults from Moscow
In Russia, the vice -chief of the National Security Council, Dmitri Medvedev, praised Trump for his stand on Selenskyj. That was an “ice -cold clap”.
Trump said Selenskyj the truth in the face and explained to him that he played with the Third World War. “And the ungrateful pig got a strong slap in the face from the owners of the pigsty. This is useful,” wrote the former president at Telegram.
