Walz ready for TV duel against Vance

TV debates are important dates in the US election campaign. After the Democratic presidential candidate Harris, her running mate, Tim Walz, has now also declared his willingness to take part in such a duel. His opponent Vance still has to agree.

The Democratic US vice presidential candidate, Tim Walz, has agreed to a TV duel with his Republican opponent JD Vance on October 1. “See you on October 1, JD,” wrote Kamala Harris' “running mate” on the online platform X. Vance, who wants to move into the White House with presidential candidate Donald Trump, did not initially comment.

Harris meets Trump on television

The broadcaster CBS News had invited the two candidates to a debate in New York and offered four dates to choose from – two in September and two in October. The presidential election in the USA will take place on November 5th.

Presidential candidates Trump and Harris plan to face each other in a TV debate in September. According to the television channel ABC, the Republican and the Democrat have agreed to a debate on September 10 (local time/September 11 CEST).

Further TV duels possible

There may be further televised debates, but the dates and conditions have not yet been set. Before agreeing on a date for the first debate, Trump and Harris had a public spat and accused each other of ducking out of fear of the other.

For Harris' predecessor in the presidential race, Joe Biden, his TV debate against Trump was a debacle. Biden's weak performance increased the pressure within the party to withdraw from the candidacy and fueled a downward trend that ultimately led to the 81-year-old withdrawing in favor of his vice president. The upcoming TV debates, the framework and rules of which must be confirmed by both sides, are therefore awaited with particular excitement.
