The former high -security prison on the island of Alcatraz was considered an uninterrical place. 62 years after the closure, US President Trump wants to reopen it – and have it expanded.
US President Donald Trump wants to put the former high-security prison Alcatraz back into operation in the US state of California. The President announced this on his website Truth Social.
America has been plagued by “malignant, violent criminals” for far too long, as Trump called it, “scum of society that will never cause anything other than misery and suffering”. And further: “When we were still a serious nation, we did not hesitate to lock the most dangerous criminals and keep them far away from everyone that could harm. It should be.”
The system is to be expanded
Trump does not only want to put Alcatraz back into operation, the prison is to be “significantly enlarged” and converted and serve as a “symbol of law, order and justice”. A spokesman for the Bureau of Prison, which is responsible for the administration of the federal prisons in the United States, announced the AP news agency that the authority “will follow all orders of the president”.
The spokesman did not comment on whether it would be implemented at all. The closure of Alcatraz in 1963 was justified with the crumbling infrastructure and the high costs for the supply of the island institution, since everything, from fuel to food, had to be brought from ship.
Prison is considered insignificant
The prison, which was considered uncomfortable due to the strong sea currents and the cold pacific water that surrounds it, was housed some of the nation's most notorious criminals, including the severe criminals Al Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly.
According to the FBI, a total of 36 men tried to flee in the 29 years in which prison was in operation. Almost all of them were caught or did not survive the attempt to escape. The island of Alcatraz in the Bay of San Francisco is now operated as a tourist attraction and is under the control of the National Park Service.
