Trump agrees to TV debate with Harris

Donald Trump has agreed to a TV debate with his Democratic rival Harris. On his platform Truth Social, the Republican US presidential candidate wrote that the debate would take place on September 4.

The Republican candidate for the office of US President, Donald Trump, has agreed to a televised debate with his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris. “I have agreed with Fox News to debate Kamala Harris on Wednesday, September 4th,” Trump wrote on his platform Truth Social. According to Trump, the debate will take place in the US state of Pennsylvania.

Harris close to official nomination

Trump had previously rejected a TV debate with Harris, arguing that Harris was not yet the official Democratic presidential candidate. On Friday, however, the 59-year-old secured the necessary majority of her party's delegate votes in an online vote. According to her party, the US Vice President received enough votes for her official nomination on the second day of the US Democrats' electronic vote.

Harris had already declared her willingness to take part in a TV debate against Trump a week ago. She was ready, she told reporters. Voters deserve to see both candidates on the same stage. She has not yet commented on the date now announced.

TV debate with audience

According to Fox News, the debate between Harris and Trump on September 4 will take place with spectators and will follow similar rules to the debate between Trump and US President Joe Biden on June 27 on CNN. In that debate, the candidates were only given a pen, a pad of paper and a water bottle. In addition, only the microphone of the respective speaker was opened, while the microphone of the other was muted during the debate.

Biden's appearance at the debate on CNN went badly. He seemed weakened and at times confused, unable to finish his sentences. The debate sparked an open discussion about Biden's physical and mental fitness, which ultimately led to the 81-year-old's decision not to run for the White House again in mid-July. Biden then spoke out in favor of Harris as the new Democratic candidate.
