Sound breakdown at the European Handball Championship – Steinmeier causes laughter

The European Handball Championships officially opened in Düsseldorf on Wednesday. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier was also there, amusing the fans in the stadium with his speech.

More than 53,000 spectators at a handball game have never happened before. Until this Wednesday. All 53,586 tickets were sold for the European Championship opener between Germany and Switzerland in Düsseldorf’s Merkur Spiel-Arena.

Before the attack, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier also gave a speech. But right from the start there were slight audio problems with the speech. Individual words could not be heard, which is why Steinmeier also seemed slightly unsettled and took longer pauses. The Federal President also made a mistake with the year and welcomed the spectators to the 2022 European Handball Championship. Many fans in the arena laughed at this strange moment before Steinmeier corrected himself shortly afterwards.

But it wasn’t just in the Düsseldorf Arena that the spectators had fun; the sound problems, including the confusion, could also be heard in front of the TV sets.

A short time later, the sound in the stadium sounded normal again, so that Steinmeier was able to finish his speech normally and be greeted with applause.
