“Some security guarantees could be acceptable”

Ukraine has been demanding security guarantees for a long time. A special envoy Moscow at least did not rule out a visit to Washington Options. But Kremlin spokesman Peskow brakes the debate.

After talks in the US capital Washington, the Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitrijew has not excluded security guarantees for Ukraine. He had focused on the economy and could only talk hypothetically about this special topic, said the confidante of Russia's President Vladimir Putin in an interview by the broadcaster Fox News. “But I think that NATO's Ukraine is – as our president said – is not possible at all.” This was largely accepted, also by the Trump administration.

“You know that some security guarantees in any form could be acceptable,” he explained before he was interrupted with a question about Putin's willingness to a deal. When asked whether Moscow is taking sanctions to the condition of a fire break, Dmitrijew – the head of the state Russian fund for direct investments (RFDI) – was currently not asking about a repeal.

Peskow does not provide any new information

Moscow later braked the exchange about possible security guarantees for Ukraine. That is a very difficult topic, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskow from the Russian state news agency TASS. “This is the subject of negotiations and advice.” For the time being, it is not possible to talk about anything concrete in this context.

Dmitrijew has been the first Kremlin envoy to be discussions in Washington since the beginning of the war in 2022. According to US media reports, the sanctions were temporarily suspended for the visit, with which Putin's special envoys for economic cooperation with other countries were occupied.

Rubio: No number of endless negotiations

According to US Foreign Minister Marco Rubio, the United States will clarify whether Putin is seriously interested in the Ukraine negotiations. “We will soon know in a few weeks, not in months, whether Russia is serious about peace or not. I hope you do it. It would be good for the world,” said Rubio before his departure from Brussels, where NATO foreign ministers came together.

US President Donald Trump will not fall into the trap of a number of endless negotiations, said Rubio. If Moscow wanted peace, it would be great. If not, the United States would have to re -evaluate “where we stand and how we do.” It was clear that Washington will soon have to see real progress, “or we have to come to the conclusion that they are not interested in peace”.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte had previously said that Trump and his government had so far been very determined, but at the same time also acted in a very deliberate manner. Now the ball is in the Russian field.

Ukraine needs protection against Russian aggression

In the recent discussions about ways out of the war, which has been lasting for more than three years, has primarily made demands on Ukraine. It was not about guarantees. For Ukraine, however, it is indispensable that a peace regulation protects it from a possible rebuilding of Russian aggression.

In the draft of an agreement on both sides a few months after the beginning of the war 2022 – after everything that is known – there was talk of security guarantees. Russia wanted to be a guarantee himself, but with a veto law against the intervention of other countries such as the United States or Great Britain.
