The US government increases the pressure on the Harvard elite university. If the claims from Washington are not met after “responsible management”, all other grants would be cut.
The US government no longer wants to grant the Elite University Harvard new funding. Minister of Education Linda McMahon informed Harvard President Alan Garber in a letter that she also published on platform X.
The university should not receive any further federal subsidies as long as it did not prove a “responsible management”, a high -ranking representative of her ministry had previously declared. Research funds are initially affected. As a reason, it was said that the university based in Cambridge in the US state of Massachusett has benefited massively from state support, but does not adhere to federal specifications. At the same time, the university has an almost unmistaked billions.
The Trump government also accuses Harvard of having approved anti-Semitic protests. In Harvard and many other US universities, there were sometimes violent propalestinian demonstrations last year. The protests were triggered by Israel's military action in the Gaza Strip after Hamas' terrorist attack in October 2023.
Harvard defends himself legally
The US government is not only against Harvard, but against a total of 60 universities and universities, which it assumes a left-liberal orientation. In particular, there are sights on programs for promoting disadvantaged groups that should compensate for discrimination based on origin, gender or skin color. Trump rejects this as an expression of a “woken ideology”. The universities must meet far -reaching requirements, for example on approval procedures, rules of conduct and personnel decisions. However, Harvard legally defended himself. The university sees the freedom of expression guaranteed in the first constitutional additive.
As a consequence, the government is already considering significant funds for Harvard: Trump put a total of $ 2.2 billion (around 1.9 billion euros) on several years of federal grants and around $ 60 million from ongoing contracts with the university. According to the US media, government funding is at a total amount of around $ 9 billion.
Harvard is the richest university in the United States. In 2024, the foundation's assets were around $ 53 billion (around 47 billion euros).
