Harris emphasizes independence of the central bank

A few days ago, Republican presidential candidate Trump demanded that US presidents have a say in the decisions of the central bank. US Vice President Harris emphasized the independence of the Fed. She did not want to interfere.

US Vice President Kamala Harris has stressed the independence of the US Federal Reserve (Fed). She said she would not interfere in the central bank's decisions if she wins the presidential election on November 5. “The Fed is an independent institution and as president I would never interfere in its decisions,” Harris told reporters in Phoenix, Arizona. Harris stressed that the independence of the central bank is crucial for the country's economic policy.

In doing so, she clearly distanced herself from the opinion of Republican candidate Donald Trump. Trump said on Thursday that US presidents should have a say in decisions made by the US Federal Reserve.

The Wall Street Journal reported in April that Trump allies had drawn up proposals that would undermine the Fed's independence if he won the election. The Trump campaign distanced itself from the report at the time. But Trump's comments on Thursday suggest that he sympathizes with one point of the proposals: If he becomes president, he should be consulted on interest rate decisions, and proposals for banking regulation should be reviewed by the White House.
