“Yagi” continues to rage

“Yagi” has already caused chaos and devastation in the Philippines in recent days. It also raged in southern China, where two people were reported dead and 92 injured. “Yagi” has now hit northern Vietnam.

At least two people have died in southern China following the heavy rains caused by Super Typhoon Yagi. At least 92 people were also injured, according to the state news agency Xinhua. The two deaths occurred in the city of Ding'an on the tropical island of Hainan. Injuries were reported in the cities of Wenchang and Haikou.

“Yagi” hit land in Hainan and parts of the neighboring mainland province of Guangdong on Friday and raged overnight. Wind gusts of more than 230 km/h uprooted numerous trees, state television station CCTV reported.

About 460,000 people had to be brought to safety on the island before the typhoon. 1.5 million households were without electricity. More than 2,200 workers were mobilized to restore power to affected households.

In the Chinese special administrative region of Hong Kong, there was heavy rain overnight into Friday, but no major damage was reported. Flights were cancelled and most schools remained closed on Friday.

Previously, “Yagi” had raged in the Philippines – several people were killed there too.

“Yagi” hits Vietnam – reports of two deaths

“Yagi” has now made landfall in northern Vietnam. It reached the provinces of Hai Phong and Quang Ninh with wind speeds of more than 149 kilometers per hour, the weather service reported. According to state media, two people were killed.

There had already been heavy rain and strong winds in Vietnam on Friday evening. The cyclone uprooted thousands of trees on the island of Co To and washed boats and ships out to sea. Four airports were closed – including those in Hanoi and Haiphong.
