US government will probably take back visa withdrawal for the time being

Afraid and uncertainty recently spread among international students because the US government had withdrawn some visas. Now reports reportedly – at least for the time being.

The US government under President Donald Trump has apparently temporarily stopped the cancellation of hundreds of visas for international students. As reported by the POTTALICO PORTAL and the New York Times, deleted profiles are to be reactivated for the time being.

Accordingly, a new system for checking visas is to be developed. Visa trains solely due to criminal records should not be pursued at first. The reports are based on statements by lawyers from the Ministry of Justice in court listings.

Panic and uncertainty

The sudden visa cancellations had caused considerable uncertainty and panic among international students.

According to the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the data has been deleted by more than 4,700 students from the database “Student and Exchange Information Systems” guided by the US immigration authority since Trump's taking office.

Foreign students in sight

It is unclear how many affected people have already left the United States. Trump's immigration policy is primarily aimed at illegally entered, but ultimately foreign students with legal residence status are increasingly targeted.

Above all, the focus was – if not exclusively – who were active in connection with Propalestinian protests last year during the Gaza War. According to politico, however, sometimes minor offenses such as traffic offenses were sufficient as a reason for the withdrawal of a visa.
