US comedian Bob Newhart dies at 94

Grammy, Emmy, Golden Globe: Bob Newhart's career was long and award-winning. He became known to a younger audience through the series “The Big Bang Theory”. Now the US comedian has died at the age of 94.

Bob Newhart is dead. The US comedian died at the age of 94 in Los Angeles, numerous US media reported, citing Newhart's spokesman.

George Robert “Bob” Newhart, born in 1929 in the US state of Illinois, made his breakthrough in the early 1960s with a comedy album. In 1961 he started the “Bob Newhart Show”, which, despite many awards, was canceled after one season. A new version in the 1970s became one of the most popular TV sitcoms in the USA. Newhart acted in numerous films and series in the decades that followed. He appeared several times in the role of Professor Proton in the hit series “The Big Bang Theory”.

“Comedy has given me a wonderful life,” Newhart once said. The sound of laughter is “one of the greatest sounds in the world.” The Grammy, Emmy and Golden Globe winner had four children with his wife Virginia Quinn, who died last year.
