In a hard-fought match, the DFB women reached the semi-finals at the Olympics. Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger played a decisive role.
The dream lives on: The German women's national team has reached the semi-finals of the Olympic Games. The team led by captain Alexandra Popp won the quarter-finals in Marseille against defending champions Canada 4:2 on penalties. After regular playing time and extra time, the score was 0:0.
Germany's goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger saved two of the Canadians' penalties, paving the way for the team to advance. The 33-year-old then scored the decisive attempt herself. A missed shot by Sydney Lohmann thus had no consequences.
“We have a machine in goal,” Alexandra Popp enthused on ZDF: “Penalties seem to be her speciality, that's what we know from her in penalty shootouts. The fact that she scores it herself so coolly, chapeau.”
The semi-final will see the USA meet again on Tuesday in Lyon. In the group phase, the team coached by national coach Horst Hrubesch lost clearly 1:4 to Emma Hayes' team.
