Success against Russian hacker group

In the USA, authorities have succeeded in striking a hacker group with ties to Russian intelligence. Several Star Blizzard group websites have been shut down.

Microsoft and the US judiciary have succeeded in striking a Russian hacker group that has targeted journalists and non-governmental organizations. In a joint effort with the US Department of Justice, more than 100 websites belonging to the group that Microsoft runs under the name “Star Blizzard” were taken down.

The hackers, who have been active since at least 2017, have already been attributed to the Russian secret service by Great Britain, among others. Rebuilding infrastructure on this scale will cost the hackers time and money, Microsoft emphasized in a blog entry.

Phishing emails in circulation

In recent years, “Star Blizzard” has specifically attacked former secret service employees, Russia experts and Russian citizens in the USA. The group uses personalized phishing emails that are intended to trick the target people into revealing login details.

In the past, hackers quickly regrouped when parts of their infrastructure were exposed.
