Kamala Harris is “mentally impaired” – Former US President Trump has once again dealt against his rival, this time particularly abusively. For this he also received sharp criticism from his own ranks.
US presidential candidate Donald Trump has once again attacked his rival Kamala Harris with sharp words, but this time in a particularly derogatory way. During a campaign appearance in Wisconsin, the Republican called the Democrat “mentally impaired.”
Trump's party colleagues had recently repeatedly asked him to stop his personal attacks against Harris and instead criticize her politically. Advice that Trump apparently ignores. Trump's recent statements have also met with criticism from some Republicans.
Lindsey Graham, a Republican senator from South Carolina, condemned Trump's insults. What annoys him more than his choice of words, however, is the fact that these attacks are not helpful in the election campaign: “The better course would be to condemn her policies, which are destroying the country. I'm not saying she's crazy, her political goals are crazy.” he said in an interview on CNN.
“Born mentally impaired”
During a campaign appearance in the small town of Prairie du Chien in the state of Wisconsin, Trump lashed out at Harris: “Joe Biden has become mentally impaired. Kamala was born that way.” Referring to the issue of migration, which is particularly contentious in the US election campaign, he said: “She (Harris) was born this way. And if you think about it, only a mentally impaired person could have allowed this to happen to our country.” Harris is responsible for an “invasion” of migrants. Trump described violent criminals with a migrant background as “hideous animals” and “monsters.”
Maryland's Republican Governor Larry Hogan also sharply criticized Trump's attacks on Harris. “The comments are not only an insult to the vice president, but also inappropriate toward people with intellectual disabilities,” said Hogan, who is currently running for a seat in the U.S. Senate. On Sunday, Hogan said he would not vote for Harris or Trump in November.
Reaction to Harris' visit to the Mexican border
Trump's verbal gaffes are apparently a reaction to Harris' visit to the border with Mexico on Friday. There Harris outlined her plans for stricter immigration law. The United States has “an obligation to set rules at our border and enforce them,” she said. She takes this responsibility “very seriously.” Harris also declared combating fentanyl to be a “top priority.” A large proportion of the opioid drug enters the USA via the southern border.
Trump then complained in Wisconsin that the conservative broadcaster Fox News had also reported on Harris' nationally broadcast appearance. “They shouldn’t be allowed to report on this,” Trump said. He attacked Harris herself as a “liar.”
