Mango founder Andic dies in a mountain accident

He was one of the richest men in Spain: Isak Andic. Now the founder of the fashion brand Mango has died in an accident in the mountains. He opened his first shops in the 1980s.

The founder and owner of the Spanish clothing brand Mango, Isak Andic, is dead. The 71-year-old had an accident on Saturday, the company said, without providing further details about the circumstances.

According to police, Andic died in a mountain accident. The businessman slipped while hiking with relatives near the Catalan city of Barcelona and fell over 100 meters from a cliff.

First fashion stores in Barcelona and Madrid

Born in Istanbul in 1953, Andic moved with his family to the Spanish region of Catalonia in the 1960s. In the early 1980s he opened several fashion stores in Barcelona and Madrid under the name Isak Jeans. 40 years ago he renamed it Mango.

With 2,700 sales points in more than 120 countries and more than 15,000 employees, Mango closed the last financial year with a record turnover of more than 3.1 billion euros. This corresponds to growth of 15 percent compared to 2022. According to the group, almost 80 percent of sales are now generated outside of Spain. Andic was considered one of the richest men in Spain, with an estimated fortune of around three billion euros.
