Giuliani loses apartment to election workers

Trump's confidant Giuliani was convicted of defaming two election workers – but was unable to pay the damages. That's why New York's former mayor now has to hand over a luxury apartment, watches and car to them.

During the 2020 presidential election, Rudy Giuliani falsely accused two poll workers in Georgia of voter fraud. This was followed by a trial and a verdict last December against Donald Trump's former lawyer: he was ordered to pay the women a total of $148 million in damages. But Giuliani then filed for bankruptcy – and apparently couldn't raise the money.

The two women – mother and daughter – should now be compensated differently: According to another court ruling, Giuliani must hand over his apartment in Manhattan to them, as well as a watch collection and a Mercedes that once belonged to Hollywood actress Lauren Bacall.

Hand over the apartment within a week

According to the ruling, Giuliani must give up his apartment within a week. The women would then have the right to sell it, their lawyer Aaron Nathan told CNN. The apartment with a wood-paneled library is on New York's Upper East Side, not far from Central Park. According to previous reports, Giuliani put it up for sale in 2023 for $6.5 million – and later lowered the price to just over $5 million.

After the 2020 election, Giuliani falsely claimed that aides like the two women had thrown away Trump's ballot papers and counted fake papers from Joe Biden, who ultimately won. The mother-daughter duo from Georgia became the focus of angry Trump supporters because they were seen on a widely circulated video.

Trump's companion

After Trump's election defeat, Giuliani was a central figure in the elected incumbent's attempts to overturn the election outcome using baseless allegations of fraud and thus stay in office.

Before he became Trump's loyal and sometimes aggressive companion, he was highly respected across party lines, including in his office as mayor of New York during the terrorist attacks of September 11th.
