According to Israeli sources, three Israelis were killed in an attack in the West Bank at a border crossing with Jordan. The men died of serious gunshot wounds, according to the Israeli rescue service Magen David Adom. According to the Israeli army, the victims were civilians, while the newspaper Haaretz spoke of “security personnel”.
The Israeli military said a truck driver who had entered the country from Jordan opened fire on security forces. Security forces killed him.
Israel closes border crossings to Jordan
The attack took place at the Allenby Bridge, also known as the King Hussein Bridge, a border crossing into Jordan in the eastern West Bank. It is located about halfway between the Jordanian capital Amman and Jerusalem. It was the first such attack on the border with Jordan since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip.
After the attack, Israel closed all border crossings to Jordan. Jordan launched an investigation. Israel and Jordan signed a peace treaty in 1994 and maintain close security relations. Dozens of deliveries from Jordan cross the border every day – with goods from Jordan and Gulf states that are transported to both the West Bank and Israel.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the attack and linked it to Israel's conflict with Iran and militant Islamist groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah.
Violence in the West Bank has increased
Palestinians have been carrying out increasing numbers of attacks in Israel and the occupied West Bank for around two years. The situation has worsened significantly since the start of the Gaza war following the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023.
Since then, more than 660 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli military operations, confrontations or attacks in the West Bank, according to the Ministry of Health. Violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians also increased during this period.
