Big surprise: Iraq beats Ukraine

In our news ticker you will find all the important news about the Olympic Games in France.

The Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024. With t-online you have a compact overview of the latest events at all times.

The French men's team has had a successful start to the Olympic football tournament. Two days before the official opening ceremony in Paris, coach Thierry Henry's team beat the USA 3-0 (0-0) in the Stade Velodrome in Marseille.

Iraq won its first group match at the Olympic Games against Ukraine by a surprise 2-1 victory. Valentyn Rubchynskyi had given Ukraine a 1-0 lead shortly after half-time (53rd minute), and Axman Hussein equalized just four minutes later with a penalty. In the 75th minute, Ali Jassim made the decision with the goal to make it 2-1.

The Iraqis are now joint top of the table with Morocco. The Moroccans had also defeated Argentina 2-1 shortly before. However, the way this result came about will go down in history. Read more about it here.

The anti-complaining rule that was used at the European Championships also applies to the Olympic football tournaments. As the world association FIFA announced, in France only the captains of the teams on the pitch are allowed to complain to the referees about their decisions. Comments or reactions from other players can quickly result in yellow cards.

Corresponding guidelines have been sent to all participating teams. FIFA encouraged associations around the world to follow this guideline from the top leagues downwards. “Protecting match officials and treating them with respect is fundamental to the future of football,” said President Gianni Infantino.

Ten years ago, French tennis player Kevin Piette lost the ability to walk after a road accident. Although he is in a wheelchair, on some days he wears a high-tech exoskeleton that allows him to walk.

A video of him marching with the Olympic torch in his exoskeleton has now appeared on social media. Spectators around him are cheering in support. “Kevin Piette, paralyzed since an accident, made history today by carrying the Olympic torch in his exoskeleton,” it said.

The video has already reached millions of people. Users on X got emotional. “I'm so happy for him. Keep it up. God bless technology,” commented one user. Another wrote: “I can't stop watching this. I've never seen a happier face!”

Because the mattresses in the beds in the Olympic Village were too hard for them, the Swedish handball players quickly got replacements – from Ikea, of course. In the furniture store that is well known from their homeland, the athletes bought softer mattresses in time for their opening match in German Group A on Thursday (9 p.m.) against neighboring Norway.

The fact that the Olympic beds are made of cardboard, like in Tokyo 2021, was not the problem, said backcourt player Jamina Roberts to the newspaper “Expressen”: “That's completely fine. But the mattresses are hard. They are brand new, so it takes time for them to soften. But we need to find good sleep right away.” That's why they got replacements. “You have to be solution-oriented and do what's best for you,” said Roberts.
