In the dispute over Iran's nuclear program, Witkoff, who was envoy, again proposed talks – to prevent military escalation. Security advisor Waltz chose clearer words.
The United States is calling for negotiations on an end to the Iranian nuclear program. “We don't have to solve everything militarily,” emphasized Steve Witkoff, the US special envoy in Fox News. President Donald Trump's offer to an atomic agreement is an attempt to counteract military steps.
“Our signal to Iran is: we sit down and see if we get to your destination through dialogue and diplomacy. If that succeeds, we are ready to do so,” said Witkoff. If it does not succeed, the alternative is not a good thing.
Waltz calls for “complete disassembly” of the nuclear program
The national security advisor of the USA, Mike Waltz, struck clearer tones than Witkoff: In an interview, he called for the “complete disassembly” of the Iranian nuclear program. “All options are on the table and it is time that Iran completely departs from its striving for a nuclear weapon.”
Nuclear weapons in Iran would lead to a arms race in the Middle East, said Waltz. “This is completely unacceptable for our national security.” He did not want to reveal any further details about the “back and forth” with Tehran on request.
No discussions so far after Trump letter
Trump had said to have written a letter to Iran's top leader, Ajatollah Ali Chamenei a few weeks ago: “It says that I hope that they will negotiate, because if we have to intervene militarily, it will be terrible,” said Trump at the time.
Chamenei rejected the offerings – and confirmed his doubts about Trump. During his first term, Trump had unilaterally released the Vienna nuclear pact in 2018, which should limit Iran's nuclear program and, in return, cancel sanctions. After that, Tehran no longer adhered to the requirements of the agreement.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi recently said that Tehran would soon react to the “threats and possibilities” of the letter. As long as Washington does not change his printing policy, no dialogue is possible.
Atomic authority registers accelerated Uranium enrichment
With a view to its nuclear program, Iran repeatedly asserts that it only serves peaceful purposes. However, the UN Atomagentur Iaea announced last month that the Islamic Republic further accelerated the enrichment of uranium to an almost weapon-compatible purity.
In addition, there were always statements by Iranian politicians, maybe you should build a nuclear weapon – especially with a view of Israel.
