The US Democrats have a rare opportunity to stop a project by the Republicans. Apparently they want to use them and block the transitional budget – despite the concern to be held responsible for a shutdown.
According to their party leader in the Senate, the US Democrats want to block the transitional budget with which the Republicans want to rule until mid-September. In this way, the United States will face a so -called shutdown of the budget in the coming days. As minority leaders in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, announced, the Democrats agree to reject the expenditure law decided by the House of Representatives on Tuesday.
The now threatening shutdown would ensure a payment stop of all federal expenditure in the US administration. Hundreds of thousands of government officials would have to stay at home unpaid, others continue to work unpaid.
Instead of continuing the existing household with small changes for six months, Schumer brought a new proposal into play: This only ensures the administrative business for 30 days. However, he gave the congress enough time to keep the administration open and at the same time negotiate a law “to which both sides agree,” said the democratic senator from New York.
Democrats would have enough voices to block
The six -month proposal in the House of Representatives had been decided on Tuesday with 217 to 213 along the factions. The Republicans also have a majority in the 100-member Senate with 53 seats, but 60 MPs have to agree there so that the proposal is brought to vote at all. Due to the blockade announced by Schumer, this should now fail. The Democrats' senators were closed behind their proposal, the minority leader emphasized.
For their 30-day alternative, however, it would again take the approval of the House of Representatives to avert the shutdown on Friday-but whose Republican MPs returned from Washington to their constituencies after the vote on Tuesday.
The upcoming negotiating of the upcoming regular budget is also difficult because the Republicans demand radical cuts and probably also want to delete in social benefits. Because of their minorities in both congress chambers, the blockade of the transitional budget is a rare parliamentary possibility of the Democrats to express protest against the Republicans.
Worry about possible Dutification
However, according to US media reports, the fact that the Democrats are actually closed behind the rejection is not at all. Some of them fear that their party would blame their party in the event of a rejection. The situation of the democratic senators therefore seems to be tricky – because at the same time, the party base wishes them a more decisive appearance against the Republicans, according to Media.
