Typhoon “Yagi” claims more lives in Vietnam

Typhoon Yagi also caused great destruction in Vietnam. At least 24 people lost their lives. Numerous boats were destroyed in Halong Bay.

Typhoon Yagi has also caused massive destruction in the north of Vietnam. According to government reports, at least 24 people were killed. The number of injured was given as 299.

The Vietnamese weather service described “Yagi” as one of the strongest typhoons in the region in the past ten years. Over three million people were without electricity – including in the capital Hanoi. On Saturday, the typhoon reached wind speeds of up to 149 km/h.

According to state media reports, four people died in a landslide in Hoa Binh province early Sunday morning. On Saturday, the storm in Quang Ninh province tore metal roofs off houses, killing four people, the disaster control agency said. On Friday, one person was killed by a tree in Hai Duong province.

Famous Halong Bay devastated

In Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is popular with tourists, the typhoon left a trail of destruction. On Sunday night, 23 boats were destroyed or severely damaged. The German embassy warned of “life-threatening storm surges”, flooding and landslides. Holidaymakers in the country should be extremely cautious.

Typhoon Yagi also raged in the World Heritage Halong Bay.

The storm raged in Vietnam for around 15 hours – and damaged over 100,000 hectares of agricultural land. The Vietnamese weather authority downgraded the strength of the storm on Sunday, but warned of the ongoing risk of flooding and landslides in the wake of the storm. “Yagi” had previously raged in the Philippines and China. Dozens of people died there too.
