The Supreme Court of the United States stopped the deportation of Venezuelan prisoners on Saturday – at least for the time being. And for the great trouble of President Trump. In his opinion, he was now “weak and incompetent judges”.
For the time being, the United States is not allowed to deport Venezuelan prisoners to El Salvador as planned. This was decided by the country's Supreme Court on Saturday – and thus made Donald Trump's immigration policy a damper.
The US President had ordered Venezuelan migrants – according to the authorities to have criminal gang members – brought to a high -security prison in El Salvador. He had agreed the procedure with El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele, who was a guest in the White House at the beginning of this week.
Harsh criticism of judgment
The Trump government made an objection to the decision on Saturday evening-one was convinced that “against radical activists”, press spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt wrote at the online intelligence service X.
Those who had complained against the deportations to El Salvador were more important to the rights of “terrorists” than those of the American citizens.
Trump himself now criticized the judgment similarly. In his online service Truth Social, he ran against the “weak and incompetent judges and law enforcement officers who allow this dark attack on our nation to continue”.
Trump argues that the migrants are members of the criminal Latin American gang tren de Aragua.
He justifies the deportations himself with a law against “foreign enemies” (Alien Enemies Act) from 1798. This allows US presidents to arrest or deport citizens of an enemy nation. However, it was only used three times in the history of the United States.
Two conservative judges criticize judgment
In the Supreme Court itself, the decision is also not undisputed. The two conservative judges Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas criticized the suspension of the deportations by the Supreme Court in a different opinion.
Alito spoke of a “legally questionable” decision that had been made in the middle of the night without listening to the opposite side.
Trump had made an election campaign with a tough course against irregular migration in 2024. The Republican has promised the largest deportation campaign in US history. His procedure is highly controversial and repeatedly joins legal hurdles. Human rights groups and the opposition Democrats accuse the US government to disregard the rights of migrants in the deportations.
