A man shot at people in a restaurant in Montenegro – ten people were killed. When the police tried to catch the perpetrator, he shot himself. The government declared three days of national mourning.
An armed attacker has killed and injured several people in the Montenegrin town of Cetinje. According to various reports, the attack took place in a restaurant or bar. Interior Minister Nikolaj Saranovic spoke of ten deaths in the evening – including two minors. Media reports that the shooter targeted people in several locations. According to unconfirmed information, also on members of his own family.
According to police, the suspected perpetrator who initially fled committed suicide. When the police surrounded the suspect and asked him to put down his weapon, the man shot himself in the head, said police chief Lazar Scepanovic. He succumbed to his injuries before he could be taken to a hospital. According to unconfirmed media reports, the man had been investigated in the past for illegal possession of weapons.
Montenegrin media report that there was initially a dispute in the restaurant. The suspect then got a gun, returned and fired.
National mourning ordered
Prime Minister Milojko Spajic visited the injured in hospital. He ordered three days of national mourning. This “terrible tragedy” affects everyone, said Spajic.
President Jakov Milatovic was also shocked by the incident. He wrote in the text message service X that he was very sad about the loss of innocent lives.
Montenegro is a small Western Balkan country with around 620,000 inhabitants. Cetinje was the country's capital until 1918, when it was moved to Podgorica. Cetinje is still the official residence of the president.
