Again, damage to a submarine cable in the Baltic Sea is said to have occurred. The coast guard is determined at the crime scene near the island of Gotland. The Swedish head of government has already been informed.
In the Baltic Sea, a cable on the seabed is said to have been harmed again. According to the Swedish coast guard, investigations were initiated for the suspicion. A ship of the coast guard is already on the way to the alleged crime scene.
According to Swedish media reports, the cable between Finland and Germany runs, so the damage is in the exclusive economic zone of Sweden near the island of Gotland.
Prime minister Messages “very serious”
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also expressed the suspicion without naming details. He had found out about the possible new cable break in the Baltic Sea through the media, he wrote on the online platform X.
Take all reports about possible damage to the infrastructure in the Baltic Sea, especially against the background of the current security situation, said Kristerson.
Repeatedly damage to cables
In the past few months, damage to communication cables and power lines in the Baltic Sea have repeatedly occurred. In several of the cases, it is determined for possible sabotage.
The cause of the cable breaks is still unclear, but there is a suspicion in the room that passing ships – intentionally or unintentionally – have damaged them with their anchors. In the course of the investigation, suspicious ships were held for days, but then released again.
NATO has announced reinforced patrols on the Baltic Sea. With warships, reconnaissance aircraft, satellites and drones, the defense alliance wants to monitor the sea area at the “Baltic Sentry” mission.
