Several dead in rocket attack on Crimea

According to Russian sources, four people were killed in a rocket attack on the Crimean peninsula. Russia believes that a second country, apart from Ukraine, is responsible for the attack. Other places were also shelled in addition to Crimea.

According to Russian sources, at least four people, including two children, were killed in a Ukrainian missile attack on the Crimean peninsula annexed by Russia. More than 100 other people were injured, said the Moscow-appointed governor of the Black Sea city of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhaev, on the online service Telegram.

According to the Russian army, Ukraine fired five missiles, four of which were intercepted by air defenses over the sea. Sevastopol was attacked “in broad daylight with ballistic missiles with cluster munitions,” Rasvoszhayev said.

The victims were killed by debris from the rockets that fell on coastal areas, among other places. A building also caught fire. The Russian news agency Ria Novosti reported 124 injured, citing the Ministry of Health. Five children had to be treated in intensive care.

Russia sees USA as responsible

Moscow attributed responsibility to Washington for the attack because it was carried out with ATACMS missiles, a US-made short-range ballistic missile. The US government therefore bears responsibility for the “deliberate missile attack on civilians in Sevastopol,” according to the Russian Defense Ministry. The flight data for these missiles were entered “by US specialists based on data from US satellite reconnaissance.”

“Such actions will not go unanswered,” the ministry added. The Russian Investigative Committee announced that it had launched an investigation into a “terrorist act.” Neither the US nor Ukraine initially commented on the rocket attack on Sevastopol. Governor Razvozhaev declared today a day of mourning in the city. Events have been cancelled.

Sevastopol is regularly targeted by the Ukrainian army. The port city is the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. Crimea is an important logistical hub for the Russian army.

Conflicting parties as a source

In the current situation, information on the course of the war, shelling and casualties provided by official bodies of the Russian and Ukrainian parties to the conflict cannot be directly verified by an independent source.

Attacks in several locations

Ukrainian attacks were also reported from other Russian regions. According to Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov, one person was killed and three others injured in drone attacks in the border region of Belgorod. According to the Ministry of Defense, Russian air defenses intercepted more than 30 Ukrainian drones in the morning. The missiles were aimed at the regions of Bryansk, Smolensk, Lipetsk and Tula in the west of the country.

At the same time, Russian attacks on a house and an educational institution took place in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. According to Governor Oleh Synehubov, one person was killed. Ten other people, including two young people, were injured. Mayor Ihor Terekhov said Kharkiv had been attacked by a guided bomb. Power was cut off in almost half of the city.
