Russian President Vladimir Putin surprisingly released the head of the Russian space authority Roskosmos, Juri Borissow. Dmitri Bakanow has been appointed the new general director of Roskosmos, according to a decree published on the Kreml website. The 39-year-old Bakanow has so far worked Vice Minister in the Ministry of Transport and in the area of innovations.
Reasons for changing management at the space organization were not officially mentioned. According to the AFP news agency, Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskow told the decision that the decision was part of a “rotation”. The authority must “develop dynamically”.
According to the Russian Internet portal RBK, the current discharge was carried out against the background of a dispute over the construction of a national space center in Moscow. There were problems with the increasing costs and ambiguities of the implementation, RBK reported.

Known for extravagant ideas
Ex-Roskosmos manager Borissow took over the post in July 2022, a few months after the beginning of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, as the successor to Dmitri Rogosin. Before his appointment, Borissow was responsible for the armaments sector before his appointment at Roskosmos.
Borissow was known for his extravagant ideas. Among other things, he had proposed to bring a nuclear reactor to the moon together with China. Under his leadership, the space agency suffered some failures, including the crash of the Luna-25 Lunlandsonde in August 2023, which Moscow had failed for almost 50 years. In addition, Roskosmos were troubled by Roskosmos.
Borissow warned in 2023, the majority of Russian equipment on the international space station ISS was out of date. In the Russian part of the ISS, three stairs occurred within two years. Moscow had announced that he wanted to give up his participation in the ISS and build his own space station.
Roskosmos also has military importance for Russia, and provides the armed forces, for example, satellite images for the front reconnaissance.
