Italy releases Iranians from prison

The Italian journalist Sala spent 20 days in solitary confinement in Tehran. She was released a few days ago. An Iranian businessman has now been released in Italy. Was it an exchange?

Just a few days ago, Italian journalist Cecilia Sala was released from prison in Iran. Now the Iranian Mohammad Abedini, who is imprisoned in Italy, has been released – this was confirmed by the Iranian Foreign Ministry. Abedini is said to already be in Iran.

The businessman was arrested at the airport in Milan in mid-December at the request of the USA. He is accused of supplying drones that killed three US soldiers in Jordan in January 2024. The journalist Sala was arrested in Tehran three days after his arrest in Milan. The Iranian authorities accused her of violating the Islamic Republic's media laws.

In solitary confinement in Tehran

She was held in strict solitary confinement in the notorious Evin Prison for 20 days. She was only released last Wednesday. Shortly after her arrest, there was speculation that the journalist had been taken hostage by Iran to prevent Abedini's extradition to the USA.

The spokesman for the Foreign Ministry in Tehran now spoke of diplomatic efforts that had been made in this matter and thanked everyone involved. After contacts between Iranian and Italian security authorities, the “misunderstanding” about his arrest in Milan was cleared up, the justice portal Mizan reported.

Previously, there were increasing indications of an impending counter-deal. Italy's Justice Minister Carlo Nordio asked a court in Milan to lift Mohammad Abedini's detention. The Italian Justice Ministry said the crimes Abedini was accused of were either not punishable under Italian law or lacked evidence.
