Iran temporarily releases Mohammadi

Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohammadi, who has been imprisoned for three years, has been temporarily released, according to her lawyer. The background is a medical examination after the removal of a tumor.

Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi has been allowed to temporarily leave prison for medical treatment, according to her lawyer. The public prosecutor's office in the capital Tehran has suspended the execution of the sentence for three weeks following a doctor's recommendation, wrote its defense attorney Mostafa Nili in Arabic on the X platform.

The background is therefore her physical condition after Mohammadi had a benign tumor removed. That's why she now has to be examined every three months, added Nili. At the end of October, Iran's judiciary granted the Nobel Peace Prize winner a long-requested hospital stay.

Long fight against the oppression of women

Mohammadi has been detained in Tehran since November 2021 and has spent much of the past decade in prison. She has been repeatedly convicted and imprisoned over the past 25 years because of her work against the compulsory headscarf for women and against the death penalty.

Since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, Iran has had a strict dress code for women. Among other things, this obliges them to hide their hair in public.

In June she was sentenced to another year in prison for “propaganda against the state.” She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her fight against the oppression of women.

Family demands release

Human rights activists had long accused the judiciary of denying Mohammadi adequate medical help in Tehran's notorious Ewin Prison. The 52-year-old activist suffers from heart failure.

Mohammadi's family and their supporters described the 21-day suspension of sentence as “insufficient.” They demanded their immediate and unconditional release or at least the extension of their temporary release to three months.
