Cuba is without electricity again

It is the third time in two months: the power grid has collapsed again in Cuba. The infrastructure is considered dilapidated and outdated. A thin repair report comes from the Ministry of Energy.

For the third time in less than two months, the power has failed in large parts of Cuba. The blackout was triggered by problems at the largest thermal power plant on the socialist Caribbean island, as the Energy Ministry announced on X. Work is underway to restore the power supply.

The power grid in Cuba had already collapsed completely on October 18th. When Hurricane “Rafael” passed over the Caribbean island almost three weeks later, the power went out again.

Power outages are part of everyday life

Cuba is in one of the worst economic crises since the revolution of 1959. Due to the poor condition of the outdated infrastructure – also as a result of the US trade embargo that has existed for more than 60 years – the thermoelectric power plants in Cuba regularly go offline and need emergency repairs. Power outages are a daily occurrence across the country.

According to a report by the anti-government news portal 14ymedio, Cuba has recently received more oil deliveries from Venezuela, Mexico and Russia. Nevertheless, the state-owned utility UNE can only generate around half of the electricity needed. “The system is weak and there is a very large deficit in production,” Energy Minister Vicente de la O Levy recently admitted.
